What Are British Values?
British values are a set of principles that underpin life in modern Britain. They were formally introduced by the UK government to help foster a sense of community, respect, and responsibility among young people. The five fundamental British values are:
- Democracy Encouraging participation in decision-making and understanding how democratic systems work.
- The Rule of Law Teaching the importance of laws, justice, and consequences in maintaining a fair society.
- Individual Liberty Promoting freedom of choice and expression while understanding personal responsibility.
- Mutual Respect Valuing others’ opinions, backgrounds, and identities.
- Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs Embracing diversity and fostering understanding of different cultures and religions.
How Schools Promote British Values
Here at St Margaret's we actively promote these values as part of our curriculum and our ethos. Here's how we do it:
Curriculum Integration
- History: Exploring democratic movements and civil rights.
- English: Discussing themes of justice and freedom in literature.
- Religious Education: Learning about world religions and promoting interfaith understanding.
- Citizenship & PSHE: Teaching rights, responsibilities, and community values.
Student Voice & Leadership
- School Councils: Pupils vote and represent their peers, learning democratic processes.
- Classroom Rules: Reinforcing fairness and accountability.
- Debates & Discussions: Encouraging critical thinking and respectful disagreement.
Celebrating Diversity
- Cultural Events: Hosting heritage days and religious festivals.
- Assemblies: Highlighting values like respect, kindness, and inclusion.
- Anti-Bullying Campaigns: Promoting tolerance and empathy.
Safeguarding & Prevent Duty
We also use British values to help safeguard our pupils from extremism and radicalisation, as part of the government’s Prevent strategy.
British values aren't just taught, they're lived. By embedding them into daily school life, educators help shape thoughtful, respectful, and responsible citizens ready for life in modern Britain
