Hi all, Hope you have had a good week. Please let me know if you have any issues or if you struggle to understand something, I am always here to help. The office is very busy at the moment so if you are due to collect work, please could you make sure you contact the office before hand to make sure they have everything available for you. Please do not arrive first thing on a Monday, thank you. Maths – Keep practising your times tables! The worksheets for White Rose Maths are no longer on the website, so you can find them attached below. You may still wish to watch the videos so please still follow the link. Year 1 - https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/ Year 2 - https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-2/ For this week please start with summer term, week 9, lessons 1-4. Record the answers in your maths book. You don’t necessarily need to write the questions out, unless the adult teaching you wants you to, as it may be easier to mark. The worksheets are fairly simple so I would suggest doing some work practically. This will help with understanding. EXTRA (optional) – I have added mastery sheets for both year 1 and year 2, for those of you who find the work easy and want to push themselves, feel free to have a go. Phonics – please follow the link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCP_FbjYUP_UtldV2K_-niWw/featured?disable_polymer=1 Literacy – This week we are going to be looking at the short film ‘Dangle’. (All work to be completed in your books, don’t forget capital letters, full stops and finger spaces!) Please watch the Link: https://www.literacyshed.com/dangle.html Day 1 WALT – retell a story using pictures to understand the characters thoughts and feelings. Play the film ‘Dangle’ all the way through. Discuss responses to the film and allow children to talk about the ending. Ask the children to predict what would happen next? Have your opinions changed since you first watched the film? Task – use booklet resource attached. Year 1 – Children draw 3 or 4 pictures to retell the story using facial expressions to convey emotions. Write one word below the picture to explain what emotion that man is feeling. Year 2 – Children to draw 4 pictures to retell the story using facial expressions to convey emotions and write a short sentence at the bottom of the picture to explain how the character is feeling. Discuss and reflect on how the characters emotion has changed. Day 2 WALT be able to write about a character’s experience using different sentence structures. Watch the film again if necessary. Recap on the different types of sentences – question, statement, command, exclamation. Explain to the children that they will be recording character thoughts and feelings using different sentence types. They will be focusing of specific events from the story and write different sentences for each scenario. Model a sentence so that they can see what we are expecting: Ask children to think about the opening scene (the man walking up the hill) and recap on thoughts/feelings. Can we think of a question he might be asking himself? Repeat with the other sentence types. Year 1 – using Resource 7a, decide whether they are a question, command, statement or exclamation. If they grasp this very easily then let them have a go at resource 7b or think of their own. (make sure resource 7a is hidden) Year 2 – Using resource 7b children use the scenarios from the story and write 1 or 2 different sentences about the event using different structures. Day 3 WALT write a diamante poem Look at the examples of diamante poems. What patterns do you notice? Draw out the diamante poem Line 1: The beginning subject, Line 2: Two adjectives about the beginning subject, Line 3: Three verbs or words ending in ‘ing’ about the beginning subject. Day 5 Year 1 WALT perform their own composition, using appropriate intonation volume, and movement so that meaning is clear. You may wish to record the children’s performances to help with the process Therefore, recording devices would be necessary. Model reading clearly. Those children who are confident might introduce some techniques to emphasise world – whispering, intonation etc. Children might use actions to highlight certain phrases as well. Model how to do this but also ensure performances are not overly dramatic. Science – World Habitats Please look through the powerpoint and discuss world habitats. Children then pick one habitat and draw the animals and plants that would live there. Please attempt to label the pictures. RE – Maccabee Brothers. Phonics – please follow the link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCP_FbjYUP_UtldV2K_-niWw/featured?disable_polymer=1 Literacy – year 1 and year 2 are doing two different tasks this week, so there are two different sets of resources. This week we are going to be looking at the short film ‘Dangle’. (All work to be completed in your books, don’t forget capital letters, full stops and finger spaces!) Please watch the Link: https://www.literacyshed.com/dangle.html Day 1 Year 1 WALT – use powerful adjectives and effective verbs. Show children the film (pause at 1min 25sec – DO NOT show the ending yet!) If you have some string or a rope, try and hang it from somewhere in the room. Ask them what they think it is? What does it do? Who do you think put it there? Explain that it is a ‘switch’ like the light switch found in your bathroom at home. What do you think it might do? Show them the sentence starter – Suddenly, I saw it…. Explain that children are going to write a description of the switch today using a range of adjectives and verbs. Recap what on adjectives, noun phrases i.e. adjectives are words that are used to describe a noun. Sentences using adjectives to describe nouns are called expanded noun phrases – these can use one or more adjectives. For more able children also discuss verbs i.e. Verbs are action words. Task - Children write noun phrases to describe the switch, think carefully about their vocabulary. Children attempt to include effective verbs. Use resource 1c (if they struggle use resource 1b to support) Year 2 WALT – To be able to discuss and respond to a film stimulus Show children the film up until 1:45. Discuss initial response without any input. Share thoughts. Try the 1,2,3 response; 1 thing they predict will happen, 2 questions they could ask about the clip and 3 things they will remember about the clip. Task – Children record their response to the film after discussing with an adult or sibling. Questions are differentiated according to ability – if children struggle/need more challenge they might need a different worksheet. (will let parents choose 1a, 1b or 1c) Day 2 Year 1 WALT talk about different points of view Show children the film (pause at 1min 25sec – DO NOT show the ending yet!) After pausing the video ask if the man should pull the switch? Discuss with them their thoughts, take a family vote. Ask children to justify/explain why they think he should/shouldn’t. What might happen? Will it be a good or bad result? Show children resource 2a, this sheet will allow children to record and remember their idea. Model filling in a sheet together e.g. I think he should pull the switch because it might give him lots of money. Task – Children record a point for or against pulling the switch and attempt to explain why, if they change their minds. Year 2 WALT – understand and discuss a dilemma. Display the word Dilemma and ask the children if they know what it means? You may want to look at origins of the word, can children think of any books where a character faces a dilemma? Children are going to explore the dilemma that the character is faced with. Should he pull the rope or not? Ask children to come up with a reason for and a reason against pulling the rope. Task – Children can record their ideas for and against and begin to back up their ideas with clear reasoning (use resource 2a if need otherwise record in books) Day 3 Year 1 - WALT plan the ending Show children the film (pause at 1min 25sec – DO NOT show the ending yet!) Refer back to the work done yesterday, what might happen if he pulls the switch? Explain that children will be working towards writing the ending of the story – from the moment he pulls the switch. Look at resource 3a and explain that they will be storyboarding the ending. Task – Children draw pictures to tell a story. Children attempt to write about the problem and resolution. e.g. Beginning Draw – the man finding and pulling the switch Write – suddenly, he saw it! Then, he pulled the tempting switch. He couldn’t help himself! Year 2 – WALT identify and understand the features of a persuasive letter. Explain that children will be writing their own persuasive letter to the man in the film. We are going to advise him on what he should do i.e. pull the rope or not. Ask children, ‘Can you remember what features we need for a letter?’ e.g. Dear, From, address. Children will use their checklist (resource 3b) to tick off when they identify a feature using the examples provided. Day 4 Year 1 WALT write and sequence the ending of a narrative. Look at the beginning of your sentence, how have you started your sentences? Which word have you used? Tell them that they will be using time conjunctions to sequence/order the story. Option – Use resource 4a and hide time conjunctions around the room and then stick them to a chart or blue tack them to a piece of paper. Be careful though as only time conjunctions can be stuck on the chart, others have been hidden around the room. Look at resource 4b and read through the example. Support (example) how to write the beginning of their story.
Task – Children attempt to write the beginning of their story. They attempt to use time conjunctions to order their story and an effective descriptions and time conjunctions. Year 2 WALT write a persuasive letter Replay the clip up until 1:45 and remind the children that they were looking at the characters dilemma. Display the reasons for and against pulling the rope. Adults – model how to write a letter if they need recapping, greeting, introductory sentences (why are you writing) and model how to present one argument before letting children attempt to work independently. Use resource 4a for ideas. If you struggle with structure, then use resource 4b to support your writing. Task - Children write a persuasive letter including most of the correct features. Children begin to back up ideas using conjunctions such as because, if etc. Day 5 Year 1 WALT write and sequence the ending of a narrative. Children will be writing the ending to their story today, what they think will happen. Remind children about the writing skills they have been working on this week including using powerful adjectives Task – Children write the ending to the story. They attempt to sequence their ideas and stay on topic. Children write sentences which make sense. Once your work is complete, watch the rest of the clip! Year 2 WALT edit and improve my writing Use resources 5a and make sure you look at and check each correction card and remember, correction need to be done in a different colour so that I can see where you have made improvements. Have a discussion with an adult before looking at your work about what you think should be included in your writing and what you need to check and make a list. Science – Micro Habitats Please look through the powerpoint and discuss micro habitats. Then see what you can find using the activity sheets. If you need them printing, please let me know. RE –How is Passover celebrated. Complete the worksheet labelling and explain the meaning of each item. If you would like a worksheet printed, please let me or the school know. History – The Great Fire of London, lesson 3 – How do we know about The Great Fire of London? Go through the powerpoint and find out facts about how we know about the great fire of London. Once you have been through the powerpoint let children have a go at the activity sheets (2 activity sheets). Let me know if you would like worksheets printed. Extra activity for those who fancy a challenge: So, as a school we are aiming to get an award called the ‘Fair Trade Award’. In order to receive the award, we need some children to complete the task.
