At St Margaret’s, we understand that children learn best when they feel happy, confident, and secure. Sometimes, however, life brings challenges that can make it harder for children to manage their emotions or focus on learning. That’s where our ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) comes in.
Mrs Simmonds, our trained ELSA works with children to help them understand and manage their feelings, develop coping skills, and build positive relationships. The aim is to support their emotional wellbeing so they can get the most out of school life.
What does an ELSA do?
An ELSA offers targeted emotional support through one-to-one or small group sessions. These sessions take place in a calm, safe space within school, where children can talk openly and explore their thoughts and feelings.
ELSA support may focus on:
• Building self-esteem and confidence
• Managing emotions such as anger, anxiety, or sadness
• Developing social skills and friendships
• Coping with loss, change, or family issues
• Improving concentration and motivation
How does it work?
Children are usually referred for ELSA support by their class teacher. Each programme is tailored to meet the child’s individual needs, and progress is regularly reviewed. The ELSA works closely with parents, teachers, and other professionals to ensure consistent support both in and out of school.
Our goal
The ultimate goal of ELSA support is to help children become more emotionally resilient and independent. By giving them the tools to understand and manage their feelings, we empower them to thrive—both in their learning and in life.
